We’ve spent over a month with the Renault Duster in the Car&Bike garage, specifically testing the 1.3L Turbo Petrol variant. While on paper, the 6-speed manual gearbox should be more efficient than its wet-clutch DCT automatic counterpart, we wanted to get behind the wheel and prove it in the real world.
The debate between manual and automatic often boils down to convenience versus control, but for many buyers in India, fuel efficiency is the ultimate deciding factor. Since we previously tested the Duster 1.3L DCT (which returned an average of 11 kmpl), we were eager to see if the manual transmission could offer a significant improvement.
To make this comparison fair and accurate, we subjected the manual Duster to the exact same rigorous testing parameters used for the automatic version.
The Testing Methodology
To ensure consistency, our “real-world” test wasn’t just a highway sprint. It was a mix of daily city commutes and intercity travel.
- Climate Control: Air conditioning was set to a constant 23°C with the fan speed on Auto.
- City Driving: Speeds were strictly kept under 50 km/h.
- Highway Driving: Cruising speeds were maintained between 80-100 km/h.
The Duster’s 50-litre tank was filled to the cut-off point at the start of each leg of the test. Here is how the numbers stacked up.
City Performance: Beating the DCT in Traffic
In dense city traffic, where automatic gearboxes often hunt for gears and sap power, the manual transmission holds a distinct advantage.
We drove the SUV for approximately 70 km in urban conditions. At the end of the run, the Duster consumed 6.73 litres of fuel.
Crunching the numbers, this resulted in a city mileage of 10.40 kmpl.
Compare this to the Duster DCT automatic, which managed only 9.2 kmpl in the city. That is a clear victory for the manual in stop-and-go traffic.
Highway Performance: Stretching the Legs
When we hit the open highway, the gap tightened, but the manual continued to lead.
Over a distance of 83.5 km, the SUV consumed 4.77 litres of fuel.
This gave us an impressive highway mileage of 17.5 kmpl.
For context, the DCT automatic returned 15.5 kmpl on the same stretch. The taller gearing and direct control of the manual transmission allowed it to utilize the turbo-petrol engine’s powerband more efficiently at cruising speeds.
The Final Verdict: The Enthusiast’s Choice is also the Economist’s Choice
So, what is the final verdict after combining our city and highway figures?
The Renault Duster 1.3L Turbo Petrol Manual achieved a Real-World Average Fuel Economy of 12.53 kmpl.
While the DCT offered excellent convenience and respectable figures for an automatic, the manual version proved itself to be the more frugal option.
For those willing to shift gears themselves, the 6-speed manual Duster offers a marginally better, more engaging driving experience, and rewards you with lower running costs at the pump. It is a win-win for the pragmatic enthusiast.
